A lot of people do these SAP courses and cannot find anyone who has the confidence to hire them. A lot of risk involved so a lot of freshers find it difficult to get in. For you it seems you have no issue there. Then about being a trainer, I am not sure how this is possible when you are yet to work on the SAP system. Does this involve training people on the SAP system you have not used in the real work environment? With no real work or project experience, you will be training based on solely what you learned or what is in the manual. Maybe I am off track, but it seems that's what you implied. Finally, always try to do what gives you the most satisfaction and makes you happy.

I have training directly on-line from a freelance trainer based at Hyderabad. Through regular practice and research, I have become well versed in all important concepts in SAP-HR as far as a fresher is concerned. I am also facing severe challenges in getting a job. I got some calls to join as a trainer in small time institutes in Delhi /NCR, but later found out that such small time institutes not only dupe students with huge amounts of money by giving false promises of jobs but also do not pay their trainers in time. Sometimes payouts to trainers gets delayed for several months. These institutes are not the authorized training partners of SAP and the software they use is not the original SAP software. There are several cases pending against these institutes in the consumer courts in India filed by those students who had been duped by these small time institutes. Many of these small institutes, due to fear of being legally persecuted either change their names or close down altogether, without informing either the students or the trainers in advance. I have also received a job offer to work as an end-user in SAP payroll for a company in Ahamedabad. As regards to the Ahmedabad job, the company HR executive is saying that I will not be paid any salary for the initial three months. After three months, based on my performance, I will be paid 7-8K stipend from the fourth month on-wards. After I get one year old in the company, I will be paid as per the industry standards. It is not that money is an issue, neither is relocation from one city to another. The main issue is that what will be the growth opportunities if I join as an end-user in a city like Ahmedabad. I can ever get opportunities in SAP implementation or maintenance in the future if I start from a small or medium sized company in a small city. Please advise if I should go for the job as a trainer in any of these institutes or as an end user in the Ahmedabad company. Looking forward to valuable suggestions in this regard. Many employers in India either ignore a candidate or underpay him / her when the candidate is not a certified professional. I do agree with your views with regard to many private and unauthorized SAP institutes taking students (and also the trainer) for a ride. As regards to your career, I think you have to give serious thought to what you want to be. Teaching is one kind of profession whereas consultancy, implementation and support (whether you work for under the payroll of some organization or work independently) is another and different one. Skills and experience required for being a teacher are different from those required for consultancy and support. Teaching requires good and simple communication skill , some student psychology and good knowledge of the subject. Moreover, teaching requires an innate passion to teach. Consultancy is a vaster arena where you need to be up to date, ready to work long hours, be open and with a receptive mind to listen and learn, smart enough to offer effective and timely solutions in real time apart from having good communication skill and work psychology. You need to consider your passion and strengths before deciding which way to go. It is a wise idea to decide beforehand what you want to be and work toward it. Consultancy and implementation requires a lot of domain experience ( In India, a certification is also an added advantage ). I am not discouraging you, but no one dies of thinking in realistic terms.......Agreed ? Do you have the required experience? If not, then try to gain it. I do not think immediate implementation experience comes out of the blue to most of us. We have to work from scratch, maybe even as end users and learn the tricks of the trade, the hard way. A private tuition, for a limited period, I am afraid, may not be adequate to fathom the real time knowledge, skill and expertise that one needs before getting into consultancy. I hope you agree with me. I am not saying that learning does not breed expertise. Am just stressing on the importance of the duration of experience and exposure to practical scenarios which are essential to transform one into a skilled consultant. Such expertise can be achieved in course of time with hard work and dedication. One may even have to consider starting at the bottom rung as an end user and work his / her way up in becoming a mature consultant. There may be compromises to be made in the process in terms of money, hard work and so on. I suggest that you consider all parameters before deciding what you want to be. Absolute dedication always wins laurels, sooner or later, no matter which realm you pursue. I wish you success in your endeavor. Regards, VidhyaDhar

Therefore, you should do so immediately. Otherwise, I'd say the whole training business was a waste of your time... 2) The first choice doesn't even sound like an option, so I'm not sure why you mention it. "It's like saying that this guy has offered to cut off my leg so he can eat it. Should I let him?" 3) End user jobs do not configure and are largely irrelevant to this forum. Take it or not as you like but this is not the forum for discussing life outside of IT... All functional and technical SAP jobs are relevant to IT. Sure the job might eventually add to a HR Functional resume, but that would be many years away. Neal

And to expand on Roy's comments, I have told my wife that our children will never choose IT as a profession. Regards, Waza

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 12:43 AM PDT Business One and R/3 are very different and are not even based on the same platform. B1 is not ABAP based, nor does it sell well. I would not be surprised if SAP at some stage knocks it on the head and says "enough". It is too expensive for small companies and not powerful enough for large ones. Give it a miss. With 6 years of domain experience you should be able to break into SAP R/3 so you need to analyse why your efforts have been unsuccessful to date. You are not hitting the right companies or presenting yourself in the right way. Maybe you should visit a careers adviser and get advice on how to represent your CV and your skills. Regards, Roy mark as helpful.

| Job for Consultant Posted: 24 Oct 2011 11:29 PM PDT | Re: [sap-career] Go for SAP FICO or Stay with Web Development? Posted: 24 Oct 2011 08:21 PM PDT Hi Kal, Had you mentioned something about your academics and about your work experience it would have been more helpful, I guess. The first parameter that I would reckon as important is your answer to the following question: *Do you have a strong knowledge of accounts and business related activities ( acquired by virtue of studies and / or by virtue of practical work experience ) ? * *If your answer to the question is NO*, then the general suggestion that I can offer you is " Why not try to gain more expertise in what you already know ?" This has more advantages such as 1. Further expertise learning becomes easy and a fun job since you already know something of the subject 2. Since you are not starting your career from scratch , you do not have to spend much time toward teething activities involved with learning something anew. 3. You can plan your job prospects since you may be aware of the related condition and demand in the job market in your arena of web development and can prepare yourself accordingly. Learning SAP without knowing the ground concepts of Business process activities makes learning a more difficult and a laborious process. Moreover, please do remember that you will have to compete in the job market with candidates who are well qualified and experienced in Business and SAP domain. I am not sure if your friend considered these factors before suggesting to your learning SAP and FICO , in particular. Of course, this is my general opinion. There can be exceptional people willing to accept challenges, do hard work and excel in whatever they do and are born fighters even in dire circumstances. If you belong to that clan, then go on ahead and learn SAP. But please plan it out and do it in a methodical way (as I have described below): *If your answer to the question is YES, *then you could, as a first step , refurbish yourself with all business process activities , knowledge of which might have rusted out a bit owing to your recent (!?) five years' experience in web development ( which is a different domain, altogether). You could achieve this by joining a business related job (even if it is not a well paid one) and gaining practical exposure to all business processes. Thereafter, you could proceed to learn SAP (FI at first and CO next........FICO is not treated as a single course curriculum these days). It is true that the SAP market is good and there is great demand for apt candidates, especially in FICO. But it is a wiser idea to find if you are suitable for such a requirement and if not, gear yourself up to it methodically if you are serious about switching career. I am not discouraging you, am only pointing out ground reality so that you do not regret later about your decision. Wishing you success in all your endeavors. Regards, VidhyaDhar

Doing functional SAP FICO is like doing a PHD in Accounting and then doing additional specialization in accounting on top of that. If that sounds like a good thing, then you might be headed in the right direction. It will be extremely hard to break in however! Neal

I have never before heard of Lawson and have no idea of it, but it is certainly not a world leader like SAP which is used by many of the biggest companies in the World. You talk about going into a functional module but then mention training for ABAP and Netweaver which are technical rather than functional. To get into a functional module in SAP you need extensive experience in business processes, such as accounting, sales order processing or production management, or, for HR, personnel management. SAP HR and SAP BO are very different. BO is Business Objects, again a more technical side of SAP while HR is functional and requires knowledge of master data management, payroll processing and so forth. Without such business process knowledge you would be starting from zero and would have to get into a job where you could learn the business before even attempting to get into SAP. As for opportunities in the Sacramento area, I would really not know where to start looking, because you are limiting yourself geographically to a relatively small area. SAP consultants are generally required to be mobile. I, as a European, have worked all over Europe and in Turkey and the USA (New Jersey and Indianapolis) and am always being asked about jobs in other locations. Just today I have spoken to agents and others about jobs in London, Paris, Cologne, Hamburg, Italy and Switzerland, and in the last week also about Austria, Poland, Moscow and Mauritius. That is typical. I would guess your best bet would be to find a company in the Sacramento area that uses SAP and offer your services to them in whatever capacity they need you and then get stuck into learning the SAP system on the job, so that you will eventually find your niche within the company. Make yourself useful, carve out a job for yourself and you can turn it into a career within the company which may lead to offers from other local companies when you have knowledge to offer them. That is the best I can suggest. Regards, Roy Mark as helpful.

Please help me make my career. Regards, Bryan | | __.____._ Copyright © 2011 Toolbox.com and message author. Toolbox.com 4343 N. | Job for Consultant Posted: 22 Oct 2011 11:04 PM PDT | Re: [sap-career] Job as SAP ABAP Fresher Posted: 22 Oct 2011 08:47 AM PDT That is very good, constructive advice from Neal and is well worth following. If you do as he says and record every time you are involved in solving problems and developing new solutions in a company you can also show that you can contribute to a new implementation and then the world is your lobster. Something like a help desk. But on application, I ask that they let me work on coding small ABAP's on the side. In your resume, you can record how many ABAP's you've written that were used in Production and what % of your work time was spent on ABAP. In a few years, you are no longer someone with no experience. And your go getter attitude will also be a big hit on your resume. Heck, if you are good, they may even move you to full time ABAP...
